bh oddRuler – Physically correct Spacing guide tool for Maya

I was watching a video from AnimationPhysics.org discussing ‘the odd rule’ or ‘Galileo’s Ramp’, which demonstrates a formula for calculating physically correct spacing of a body affected by gravity and I thought ‘maybe I could create a tool for Maya that would help figure this out by creating visual guides in the viewport based off that formula’.

So I did! This tool takes two objects (start and end positions) and the number of frames the move should take and creates guides that represent the physically correct spacing for natural acceleration due to gravity. It’s a very early WIP right now but I think it has promise.

Spidercat Returns! Unity mechanim study continued..

I’m learning about the Mecanim system in the Unity game engine and I put this test project together to try out using blend trees and scripting to switch between different animations like walk, run, idle, jump, walk+turn etc driven by user input.

All modeling, rigging and animation here created by me.

Guitarimation

I did some really rough straight-ahead pencil tests in TV Paint while learning the basics of the program and thought it might be fun to add some sound effects to those using only a guitar (or 3) and some effects pedals.

A fun little break for me from the much more technical CG animation/rigging I usually do. Gotta keep things loose and analogue sometimes 🙂

Animated short about the power of Unions

A short I worked on just before Christmas for the Tilnærmet studio in Norway. I rigged and animated all characters here (some props too!) in 22 days.

Rigging and animation was done in Maya, lighting and rendering was done by Tilnærmet in C4D using Maxwel.

Hopefully the story comes across, even if you don’t speak Norwegian!

More drawing..

The ongoing fight between me and my drawing ability continues. It’s never really been something that comes naturally to me but I made a vow last summer to start drawing every day and I’ve kept it since. I keep it varied by alternating between 30 second gesture sketches done on the computer with a tablet and head doodles/studies on paper with pencil. A lot of these were done while thinking about a particular character I’m animating in CG at the moment. I find it helps me explore ideas and think about the personality of who I’m trying to get across, so that feels useful and productive to me even if I’m rarely satisfied with the finished drawings.
