bhGhost Smooth Mode

Another update I’m working on for bhGhost. These days with OpenSubdiv and Maya 2016 getting faster at handling rigs it’s nice to work with the characters smoothed in the viewport. The current version of bhGhost wouldn’t give you very accurate ghosts in that situation though so I’ve added a new ‘smooth mode’ which improves that.

As used in..

I was watching a making-of video on the new movie The Book of Life and noticed something familiar. Looks like at least one of the animators at Reel FX likes to use bhGhost 🙂
Always cool to see it out there!

bh oddRuler – Physically correct Spacing guide tool for Maya

I was watching a video from AnimationPhysics.org discussing ‘the odd rule’ or ‘Galileo’s Ramp’, which demonstrates a formula for calculating physically correct spacing of a body affected by gravity and I thought ‘maybe I could create a tool for Maya that would help figure this out by creating visual guides in the viewport based off that formula’.

So I did! This tool takes two objects (start and end positions) and the number of frames the move should take and creates guides that represent the physically correct spacing for natural acceleration due to gravity. It’s a very early WIP right now but I think it has promise.

HorgoSculpt – Cached Animation Correction Tool

I was inspired by the Chronosculpt demo videos and wanted to create a similar tool that would work right inside Maya without having to use another app and this is the result. Using this tool individual frames or a range of frames of an Alembic or Maya cache can be fixed quickly or I can make an overall modification to the model for the entire cache. This could also be used on cached cloth simulations to fix bad frames or intersections etc.

Rigging R&D HipSwayRig

A little demo showing a different approach to rigging the hips to allow for a natural swinging motion, inspired by a comment made by a member over on the 11 Second Club. I think this could potentially be quite useful for creating more natural walks and it’s not that tricky to add to a rig.

Victor Navone (Pixar) took some interest in this video and left some nice comments on it which made me very proud 🙂
